Mathew Odok, the Nigerian driver killed during Calabar kidnapping that was hardly mentioned in the media

On Wednesday June 22, 30 gunmen ambushed an armed four-car convoy of mine workers at Idundu Bridge around 6-7am on the outskirts of Calabar, Cross River State.

The militants shot dead a Nigerian driver and forced the workers onto a boat under the bridge. Eye witness reports suggests the incident at the bridge was over very quickly.
The expatriates includes, three Australians, a Netherlander, a South African and two Ghanaians, who were on their way to a cement manufacturing company, La-Farge Holchim, located at Mfamosing.

They are employees of MacMahon Construction Company, a contracting firm working at the Mfamosing plant of the United Cement Company of Nigeria Limited. But, there was scant mention of this Nigerian driver in all media reports

His name was Matthew Odok, a driver with the company. The local and international focus was, largely, on the expats who were ambushed, abducted and released after five days.

There appears to be no available photo of Mr. Odok. He was mentioned by his first name in some of the initial reports and in a lengthy statement from Macmahon chief executive Sy van Dyk.

In a statement, Van Dyk said the ordeal was traumatic and an incredibly stressful experience.

"While we are relieved to be able to reunite the seven men with their loved ones, we are deeply saddened by the loss of the local driver Matthew Odok, who was fatally injured during the initial incident."

Man charged with homicide of his grandparents, sister, nephew and dog after shooting them in the head and setting them on fire (photos)

A 24 year old Missouri man has been charged with 4 counts of homicide after killing his grand dad and mum, sister and 3 month old baby nephew by shooting them on the head and setting them on fire .

Grayden Denham of Edgerton in Platte County is accused of murdering his grandparents Russell Denham, 82, and Shirley Denham, 81, his sister Heather Ager, 32, her son, Mason Schiavoni, 3 months and a dog in a terrifying homicide case in February.

All the bodies were burning when firefighters arrived and had to put out the flames on each body, Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen said at a press conference on Monday.
"Upon further examination of the scene, the following details were revealed: Every victim had sustained one or more gunshot wounds. The canine had sustained gunshot wounds and every victim had been set on fire," Owen said.
Grayden's mother, Shelly Dunham, has said that her son did not kill his family members.
"I was blindsided by this," she told the Kansas City Star. "He's innocent until proven guilty."
Grayden Denham is also being charged with arson for setting fire to the home, as well as animal abuse and tampering with physical evidence.

After the deaths of the Denham family, Grayden Denham was initially not a suspect. He was charged with theft for taking his grandparents' car and fleeing to Arizona where police found him and arrested him while he was completely naked.
"A quadruple homicide is a very serious crime, and if we had the opportunity to allow 12 independent grand jurors to review that case, assist us in the investigation and ultimately determine what charges if any can be brought, in a very serious case we want to take that opportunity," Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said. We had that opportunity in this case and that's what we decided in this case," he added.
Denham's attorney John P. O'Connor says he plans to plead not guilty to the charges

The Police were called around 5pm on Friday but by the time they got there, Christy Sheats was found standing near the bodies of her two daughters still holding the gun. Madison was pronounced dead on the scene, while Taylor was airlifted to Texas Medical Center in Houston in critical condition on Friday, where she later died on Saturday morning.

When the Police responded to the crime scene, they asked the mother several times to drop her weapon but she refused and ended up getting killed by the responding police officer.
The husband and father was home at the time, but he was not injured. He was later taken to a hospital because he was distraught.
'It was a family argument that turned into a shooting. But we're still trying to put the pieces together,' Sheriff Nehls told the Houston Chronicle. 'Right now, all we can do is try to pray for the father and the husband so he can try to work through this.'
No details on what started the argument was made available.

Five dead in Mogadishu hotel attack claimed by Shabaab
At least five people were killed Saturday in an attack on Naasa Hablood hotel in southern Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, that was quickly claimed by Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab militants.
The assault was led by a suicide bomber who drove a car filled with explosives, the jihadists said in an online statement.
The hotel is often used by politicians and members of the Somali diaspora who visit the city.

The attack started at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT) with a powerful blast from the car, followed by two other explosions and then heavy gunfire.
At night time, there was still sporadic gunfire coming from the Naasa Hablood hotel in Mogadishu, after it was stormed by the militants, witnesses said.
"What we know is that there were at least five victims, including three security guards, and that six others were injured," police official Ibrahim Mohamed said.
"The security forces have managed to enter into the hotel and are in the process of restoring security," Mohamed added.
According to an AFP photographer, Somali security forces cordoned off access to the neighbourhood in which the hotel is located.

The Shabaab swiftly claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a statement on the Telegram smartphone app that jihadist gunmen had forced their way into the hotel.
"The attack started with a heavy blast carried out by a brother who drove a car loaded with explosives. Gunmen fought their way into the hotel, and we believe that casualties were inflicted in the enemy's ranks," the Shabaab said.
Saturday's attack came just three weeks after another assault quickly claimed the Shabaab group on the city's Ambassador hotel left 10 dead including two lawmakers when a huge car bomb ripped the front off the six-storey building.
